  5.     "Allende is here!" shouted the thousands who gathered to
  6. witness the reburial of a former President. In a
  7. government-sanctioned ceremony, the remains of Salvador Allende
  8. Gossens were moved from a family plot to Santiago's central
  9. cemetery, alongside Chile's other past presidents. A Marxist
  10. who tried to introduce radical reform, Allende died, reputedly
  11. a suicide, as troops stormed the presidential palace during a
  12. 1973 coup that led to 16 years of military rule. Current
  13. President Patricio Aylwin, who supported Allende's ouster but
  14. quickly tired of rule by the generals, was faint in his praise
  15. of Allende. But he added, "The pain of the drama that Chile
  16. lived through has taught us that these circumstances should
  17. never be repeated."
